Mark Twain House

Of all the things to see and do in New England, one of my favorite activities is visiting the Mark twain House and Museum. Mark Twain and his wife lived in the home they had built from 1874 to 1891. After the death of their daughter, as well as some financial troubles, the Twain family sold the home and moved into a new home in Redding, CT where Twain died in 1910.

Since the house was sold it went from a private residence to a school to coal storage facility to a subdivision. Finally, a group of Hartford residents bought the property and had it restored. Now it is a National Historic Landmark restored to the glory of the period when the Twains called it home. It includes incredible examples of art and architecture, including Tiffany hanging lamps – after all, Louis Comfort Tiffany himself was commissioned by Twain to complete the interior decorating in 1881.

No One Wants To Read In The Dark

Sometimes overhead lighting is necessary. I have a very small apartment with only one small window. It gets really dark during the winter. Reading is my favorite past time, but my eyes get strained when I try to read in my dimly-lit apartment. My main sources of light were a small kitchen-ceiling lamp and floor lamp.

I realized that in order to indulge in my reading, I would have to get some tiffany style hanging  lamps. I wouldn’t usually choose overhead lights, but it turned out they worked really well to brighten up my apartment.  It was a comfort to know that I could read any time I wanted.

Let’s face it; there are millions of different opinions about how to create a warm and inviting indoor space. Whether it’s through Feng Shui, updated lighting, or a new coat of paint, there are several proven methods to make a room look better. But for people on a budget, it’s possible to create a unique indoor atmosphere with just a few simple changes.  One simple solution to update a space is with pendant lighting.

Pendant lights provide a chic, modern look while still serving as a pragmatic lighting source. You can make a dramatic change to the dynamic of a space with some new window treatments to diffuse the natural light and reserve the pendants for the nighttime. Tiffany style pendant lights come in several different colors and designs, and it’s possible to use lanterns with different kinds of shades to diffuse the light.

You can easily change the mood in your home with decorative lighting.  You can transform a brightly lit room to a more cozy and comfortable room with different lights.  And you can definitely add class to your living room with a crystal chandelier hanging in the center.

You can also get a Tiffany pendant light that you can set up anywhere in your home.  There are great floor lamps and table lamps you can use as well. Your home will have a distinct look with the right lighting fixtures in place. And you don’t have to spend that much either. Some pieces are very affordable, so you can splurge a bit and make your home really beautiful.

Eye Sore No More

One of my best friends bought his first house, about a year ago. The best feature in his home was the huge walkway when you first enter the house. It has a beautiful staircase, hardwood floors down the hallway, so nicely done. The eye sore was the ancient ceiling lamp. That was the first thing to be replaced.

While we were shopping for furniture, we decided to go into a lighting store. We came across the most beautiful Victorian Tiffany hanging pendant light. The colors were brilliant and bold. It had the most amazing detail. The Tiffany lamp was the best purchase that he made for his home by far. He loved it so much that he ended up getting one for each room.

Hanging Tiffany Style Lamps

Now that you’ve acquired Tiffany style lamps for your home, you need to hang them with care. Many people have difficulty settling on the right height to hang their lamps. Typically, I recommend that each lamp be hung approximately 28-34 inches above the surface beneath it.

By hanging the Tiffany style lamps at this height, you maximize the cozy light emitted. Of course, when it comes to decorating other factors can change how a piece is displayed. A smaller table may require a lamp being hung lower to achieve the same cozy light. Longer tables may require lamps to be hung a little bit higher to cast light over a greater area. My advice is to start out with the 28-34 inch range and then adjust according to the surface below the lamp.

Pool Table Lamp

The gap between the end of football season and the start of baseball season seems like it goes on forever. Yes, there’s still college basketball, but honestly, I don’t really don’t feel the same enthusiasm until March Madness rolls around. To pass the time this year, I’ve decided to redecorate my game room.

The game room is actually just my basement that I’ve equipped with a pool table, built-in bar, and giant flat screen television. I’ve wanted to give it a cool 1920s or 1930s pool hall feel for a while now. One of the ways I’m achieving that look is with Tiffany lighting. I bought a wonderful Tiffany style billiards lamp to hang above the pool table. It’s an excellent combination of stunning glass artistry and modern lighting that sets just the right tone for the game room.

The resurgence of swag

Swag lamps are officially “in.” The most common definition of a swag lamp references a fabric lamp shade hung from a metal chain. The lamps shades, popular from the 1950s-1980s, come in all different colors and patterns and are frequently ornamented with a fringe, either of cloth or beads. Though the fabric shade swag lamps are most remembered, any hanging lamp is considered swag.

Tiffany hanging lamps are a stylish way to pay homage to the swag style. True to swag form, they are hanging, but can be further customized with colored pull chains and cords. The shape of tiffany hanging lamps mimics that of the traditional fabric shade without the worry of fraying fabric or fringe. There’s also no need to worry about fading with the vibrant stained glass panes of a tiffany style hanging lamp. This is an easy style trend to follow that even when the craze ends you’ll be left with a beautiful, quality lighting piece.

Ideal Locations for Accent Lighting

Tiffany style pendant lights are small, ornate fixtures that pack a dynamic decorating punch. Pendant lighting provides unique ambiance and illumination to any indoor location. Some ideal places to put pendant lighting to get the best out of its many versatile uses:

* In the kitchen – adds a sense of style when placed over a kitchen island. It will also keep your work space well lit.
* In the living room – accentuates important decorative pieces like sculptures or artworks.
* In the bedroom – to highlight the bed, a chair or even to accent the headboard, thus adding a bit of romance to the room.
* In the work space – actually works better than an ordinary lamp as it brightens up those areas that need more lighting, particularly the desk.

Medieval Lighting with Modern Flair

Wall candleholders have been around for thousands of years. They date back to medieval times where these wall candleholders were used for lighting the hallways of castles. Although candles are rarely used for lighting in Western society, there modern ancestor, the wall sconce, is quite prominent. Today these charming pieces of decorative art are used to add a feeling of warmth and tranquility to the room whose walls adorn them.

A Tiffany wall sconce can be a functional work of art that provides illumination while flooding a room with iridescent light. They add comfort to the overall feeling of any room in which they are placed on the wall. With a small amount of effort you can add these to several rooms of your home and enjoy a simple but pleasing touch of art passed on down through the centuries.
