Of all the things to see and do in New England, one of my favorite activities is visiting the Mark twain House and Museum. Mark Twain and his wife lived in the home they had built from 1874 to 1891. After the death of their daughter, as well as some financial troubles, the Twain family sold the home and moved into a new home in Redding, CT where Twain died in 1910.
Since the house was sold it went from a private residence to a school to coal storage facility to a subdivision. Finally, a group of Hartford residents bought the property and had it restored. Now it is a National Historic Landmark restored to the glory of the period when the Twains called it home. It includes incredible examples of art and architecture, including Tiffany hanging lamps – after all, Louis Comfort Tiffany himself was commissioned by Twain to complete the interior decorating in 1881.
Sometimes overhead lighting is necessary. I have a very small apartment with only one small window. It gets really dark during the winter. Reading is my favorite past time, but my eyes get strained when I try to read in my dimly-lit apartment. My main sources of light were a small kitchen-ceiling lamp and floor lamp.

One of my best friends bought his first house, about a year ago. The best feature in his home was the huge walkway when you first enter the house. Now that you’ve acquired Tiffany style lamps for your home, you need to hang them with care. Many people have difficulty settling on the right height to hang their lamps. Typically, I recommend that each lamp be hung approximately 28-34 inches above the surface beneath it.
By hanging the Tiffany style lamps at this height, you maximize the cozy light emitted. Of course, when it comes to decorating other factors can change how a piece is displayed. A smaller table may require a lamp being hung lower to achieve the same cozy light. Longer tables may require lamps to be hung a little bit higher to cast light over a greater area. My advice is to start out with the 28-34 inch range and then adjust according to the surface below the lamp.
The gap between the end of football season and the start of baseball season seems like it goes on forever. Yes, there’s still college basketball, but honestly, I don’t really don’t feel the same enthusiasm until March Madness rolls around.
